Coaching Advice

by Tracee Sioux

I went to the soccer league meeting on Saturday and they gave some interesting advice to the coaches.

If your team is winning 5-0 at half time, it’s your responsibility, as the coach, to stop making goals and try to lose. Put yourself in the other team’s place. You wouldn’t like it if you went home defeated 15-0. It’s no fun for the kids or their parents.

Dur. Huh?

I get it. I’m on board with their reasoning. I just think it’s interesting.

What planet are we preparing our children to live on?

Whatever happened to try hard and do your best, and that’ll be all I ask?! It’s fun to win, but sometimes you learn from losing too. Are these soccer people on CRACK?

Planet mediocracy. Where we have a graduation ceremony for kindergarten, everyone wins a blue ribbon, and we are ALL winners.

And yes, all soccer people are on crack. Tracee, I don’t think the chantix is gonna cut it anymore. If you are gonna play with the big girls you gotta move up to the hard stuff.

I think that’s crazy reasoning. So unrealistic. Besides, the kids who *win* b/c of that plan will probably figure it out, and that’ll take all the fun out of winning anyway.
