Controversial Post About Body Hair

backhair

Having given this a great deal of thought I’ve come to a fairly significant position on the issue of girls and body grooming.

The Girl Revolution often looks at controversial hairy issues: should you let your daughter color her hair at 7? When should she shave her legs? Would you take an elementary school student to wax her bikini line?

Generally, someone brings up the fact that it’s unfair for girls to have to put so much effort, time and money into their body hair and hygiene. After all, isn’t it just natural? Some girls grow a mustache and uni-brow and plenty of guys are into that.

Okay. I get it. It’s a valid perspective. Grow out the legs, the pits and embrace the au’natural bush. The natural is beautiful. Obviously, it’s how God intended. The beauty industry is distorting beauty.

Still, if I get to pick how we become equals in this hygienic hairy issue . . . I’d prefer to introduce boys and men to tweezers, chemical hair removal creams, nose hair clippers, hot wax, laser hair removal, and a talented colorist.

Not too long ago, my daughter (now 3) asked me why I shave my legs and pluck my eyebrows. To both questions, I was taken aback. After a moment, I simply told her: “I don’t know. I guess I’m just conforming to American standards of beauty.”

I had a partner tell me “Leg hair is gross. If it’s spikey, I guess that’s okay, but once it’s long enough to be soft, that’s just disgusting.” (Said partner also commented on my breasts, eyebrows, bikini hair, and armpit hair – I don’t shave every day.) It made me feel like I had to keep myself a certain way for him to be attracted to me, and it didn’t feel good.
Honestly, what bothered me most was that he didn’t shave any of the above. Or his face, for that matter. I think it’s crap that women ‘have’ to do all of this to be beautiful, but men are ‘supposed’ to be hairy.

LOL!

That is NOT Jeremy.

I don’t think women should stop conforming. But, I wouldn’t be opposed to MEN putting in the energy, time and money for us!

I’m laughing at that photo–too funny!

My husband has twice now gone for ye olde back-waxing. He has a new appreciation for women’s efforts to deal with the extraneous hairs…

He also thinks that we should invest in our own professional waxing set-up. You know, so I can have the dubious pleasure of ripping each back-hair out by the root.

Ah…love!

OK I admit to craving the opportunity to do some Primate-like grooming on my mate.

There is nothing unhygienic about body hair.

OMG! That what I call a lot of body hair, it reaches to the arms. The hairiest I ever saw was my brother, more on the back side but not like in this blog’s photo.
