- I’m reusing the eggs from last year and from the various Easter Egg Hunts.
- I picked up the egg dye and baskets at a garage sale and I’m about to see what I can scrounge up from thrift stores, not because I don’t have any money, but because I don’t want to spend it on Easter.
- I skipped both kids’ school Easter Egg Hunts. How many Easter Egg Hunts should I have to attend? I notice their father doesn’t feel guilty about going to work instead.
- I’m putting sugarless gum in the eggs.
- I’m confiscating the candy from the various hunts and re-gifting it in their Easter Bunny Baskets Sunday Morning.
- Then I’m confiscating it and eating it.
- I’m thinking about not letting them dye eggs this year b/c of time. That or we’re buying instead of making the cupcakes we’re taking to NaNas. They wanted $6 for a dozen cupcakes. The mix is $1 and the cream cheese $1 and I can make 2 dozen. We’re making the cupcakes. We’re dying eggs.
- Zack gets a new suit – because my sister is getting married. Also it will make me happy to see him wear it and it’s only $20. No one in town sells suits for boys this year. Hope my mom will buy him one.
- Ainsley does not get a new dress or shoes.
- I might buy them Webkinz - if they are on sale. I rented “brand new with tags” stuffed bunnies that will fill up the basket for $1.25. I’ll return them to the thrift store to be resold in 3 weeks. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Declutter.
At one point in my motherhood I might have felt guilty about some of this. But, I don’t feel guilty about any of it this year.
- Good Holiday Recipe
- Don’t spend too much.
- Don’t do too much.
- Don’t make it a hassle.
- Skip events, parties and traditions if they cause anxiety.
- Don’t strive for unattainable nonsense like equality or perfection.
I am hoping to find the camera though.
Happy Easter!

I do most of the stuff listed above.. Great post.. Oh and good luck on the camera it is probably right in front of you..
Zack pulled it right out of its hiding place and handed it to me.
I don’t have kids, so when I met my husband, who has a son, I was shocked and admittedly appalled to discover that it is now standard for Easter to be treated like Christmas, with the expectation of all kinds of expensive gifts.
When I was growing up, Easter was an egg hunt around the yard, a chocolate rabbit, greeting cards, family activities like dying eggs and a nice family dinner. When did Easter become another gift giving/expecting holiday?
Your Easter plans sound lovely and low key. I wish more people would keep it inexpensive and not extravagant. I deeply resent the external pressure from advertisers and the “but all his friends will be getting presents” pressure not to make your kid feel like they’re the only one getting less (and god forbid I be the cheap step-parent who “doesn’t want to spend money on their partner’s kid.” Regardless of what your motivations are, it’s easy to become the bad guy.)
I have no problem with secularizing a holiday – I do have a problem with the push to turn it into another $100 gift giving event. Don’t kids these days have enough already? Any why can’t more people recognize that and keep holidays like Easter about religion or fun or family or enjoying a long weekend or *anything* but consumerism?

I have a trash bag of reused plastic eggs that are practically antique now. No one is getting new clothes or toys. Re-using old baskets. We will dye eggs though. (that’s their favorite,) but I make my dye with vinegar and food coloring + coloring them with wax crayons. We have eaten all the candy I bought for the eggs TWICE, so we will be using pennies, and Chinese candy left over from our Godzilla party. Hahaha! Happy Easter!
Jen’s last blog post..Oh, Hey
Right On Jennifer! I too ate the Malted Eggs and the Reeses Pieces Eggs. They are just too yummy and I wouldn’t want to get thin.
Anlina – you’d think with the economy people would be taking the mellow road.
This is so funny, Sat. I had full intentions of rushing to the next town over and getting a new dress, a shirt for the youngest boy, some new shoes for the oldest, etc..
And I just sort of stopped myself and thought, that girl, why don’t you at least LOOK around for something that will do first. Found a dress in the back of my closet I’ve worn ONCE in 1 1/2 years, found some acceptable shoes, and I found one of his brothers’ dress shirts that fit and matched perfectly.
And no, we never do the present thing – I get $store stuff for the easter basket – and it’s a sensible sized basket by the way.
It’s so disheartening to look around every season and see the world just bringing that bar higher and higher and more and more expensive with every holiday. There’s something lost in all that over doing.
