Hair Dye & Self Tanner

Ainsley wants to dye her hair blond.

Because it’s pretty.

“I wish I had blond hair like Zack,” she said.

“Well, anyone can have blond hair,” I said. “Or red, pink, brown, black. Any color really. No one is married to their natural hair color anymore.”

Personally, I think hair color is a wonderful technological advancement and the tools just keep getting better and better.

Several years ago I put some highlights in her hair while I was highlighting my own hair.

We’ve also had pink streaks glued in at one point.

It’s fun. It’s pretty.

“I want to get a good tan,” she said.

“I will buy you self tanner if you promise, promise, promise to wear sunscreen everyday, all summer long,” I told her.

“Deal,” she said.

I figure this is a great way for her to establish a good habit, the wearing of sunscreen. They didn’t have self tanners in my day. I worshipped the sun and now I have melasma to show for it. I’d rather she kept her skin nice and healthy and beautiful.

I’m off to the pharmacy to buy some Sun-In and self tanner. We’ll have a make-over party and be perfectly “sun-kissed” by day’s end.

I’ve said “no way” to the leg shaving though. Mostly, because it’s a never-ending battle once you start. It’s a pain and really isn’t fun at all.

What’s your stance on self-tanners and highlights and leg hair?

I am with you on leg hair. The longer we get them to wait, the better. Also depends on color of leg hair. I can tell my girls to wait longer because it’s very light. Not sure I’d feel the same if their hair were darker.

On highlighting. At some point, dying and lightening of hair is more about looking fresh, healthy and what looks good against our skin color. My blond hair turned blah at 14. It wasn’t brown and that would’ve looked cool with my light green eyes… it wasn’t blond.. just eh.. Highlighting was necessary so I didn’t look so blah.

Self tanners..if they’re good quality and put on properly..fine but I never have had luck. I just wear sunscreen and get a nice light tan with my 30 block and go with it. Tan as well, makes us look healthy. We are vigilant with sunblock in South Florida.

I feel these tools and tricks are more about the image of health, professional appearance, than beauty to me.

Yes, Ainsley has a lighter hair on the legs. Did you see the Jessica Simpson VH1 beauty show in Brazil? They have “golden showers” and bleach their leg hair instead of shaving it. Not a terrible idea.

The Sun-In totally didn’t work. I’m going to have to get a bleaching kit. She wants to be blond all over. Which is OK, except then we’d have to deal with roots every couple of weeks. Which is annoying. Highlights blend and grow out easier. Don’t you think?

i commented on fb, but only on my own issues! fortunately, i haven’t had to deal with the hair color issue. i would probably tell my girl no, only because i didn’t dye my hair until 8th or 9th grade (so just my own issue!). what type of tanner did u end up going with? i think the jergens healthy glow stuff is pretty good. that’s what i use and i get some nice color, although i’m not very pale to begin with, so it probably depends. my girl is nice and brown (lucky!), so that won’t be an issue for us either!!!

p.s.: we used to bleach our arm hair and mustaches back in h.s. jolene was the brand, and i think they still make it!!!

My daughter is only 4 and she occasionally asks if I’ll color her hair – but I’m a hairdresser! I’ll put washables in her for fun, but no permanent color. To high maintenance.
Luckily, she’s not asking about tans or body hair yet. I don’t see a problem with self tanning, though, I do it!

I bought Neutrogena Airbrush Sunless Tan, 3 shades darker. You just spray it on, no touching. It’s a pretty subtle difference. I also tried the Jergens lotion, but it’s so slow and is turning my palms orange in spots.
